Catalan sports paper Sport today reported that FC Barcelona is proposing an improved contract for central defender and Spanish International Gerrard Pique(22). However it is reported that Barcelona have stated that although renewing the contracts of its younger stars is crucial, Txiki Begiristain (club sports director), must first deal with and solve more pressing matters such as ongoing contract renewal negotiations with other central defenders Carles Puyol(31) and Mexican Rafael Marquez(30).
Pique’s performances for the past season have been phenomenal and putting that into perspective, his wage compensation must fit his new stature. Txiki will have proposed an increment that is comparable to other players who are internationals with a leading role within a team, and may even extend the contract duration which expires on June 30th, 2012.
